Wright Scoop Urges Festival Attendees to GoGreen

August 15, 2010 – 8:26 amNo Comment

Partnering with the Virginia Green Industry Council (VGIC) and Science Museum of Virginia (SMV), The Wright Scoop – Sylvia Hoehns Wright challenges all to GoGreen – Keep Virginia Green and Growing, ‘become champions for the environment’ during the fifth Virginia GoGreen Garden Festival (and more) held (rain or shine) September 11, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garner Pavilion located behind the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 West Broad Street, in Richmond Virginia. Festival admission is $3 and parking free. To expand the Festival day, SMV offers discounted admission. For directions, see web site www.smv.org and event details, www.VirginiaGardening.com festival option.

Event Details – Encouraging attendees to experience SMV’s Green Living Exhibits: solar house, energy efficiency, Bayscapes Garden, ‘Green Acre’ Urban Farm, storm water reclamation and Green Roof for the IMAX Dome, at 10:00 a.m., Wright introduces Eugene Maurakis, Director of Science Education and Museum Scientist, when he leads a tour, the Rain Keepers project. Later, she introduces Timothy Seaman, www.timothyseaman.com when he provides a concert at 11:00 a.m., Andre Viette when he provides a speech – VA’s Gardens Grow with Confidence – at noon; and at 1:00 p.m. urges all to see Neal Beasley, spokesperson for the Beautiful Gardens® Plants of Distinction program, demonstrate plant installation and maintenance.

Greening Urban/Suburban Landscapes – Whether experienced professionals or novice homeowners, Wright encourages all to use green-scaping concepts: build and maintain healthy soil, install right plant for site requirements; and during seasonal appropriate cycles, be water wise, adopt earth-friendly pest and weed management, and implement natural lawn care. She also emphasizes phased implementation of the ‘R’ philosophy: reduce, renew, reuse and recycle; specifically, advocating ‘put green’ back into the urban/suburban community by nurturing existing and/or replacement of ‘living green’. Still, as a recipient of the ‘Turning America from Eco-weak to Eco-chic’ award, Wright takes these concepts a step further, not simply use of plants that works-well in a region but those that contribute to regional economic sustainability: developed, grown and distributed within a community.

From Eco-weak to Eco-chic: landscape green – A signing of her book From Eco-weak to Eco-chic: landscape green, http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/from-eco-weak-to-eco-chic-landscape-green/7539795, is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Sneed’s Nursery exhibit booth. In her book, Wright combines workshop style assignments with research and ‘hands-on’ experience sharing strategies that respect existing vistas, preserving and enhancing environmental health. Recommended by Today’s Garden Center magazine, http://www.todaysgardencenter.com/products/forthegarden/index.php?storyid=2376&style=3, readers describe Wright’s book as “Sylvia’s eco-chic advocacy embodies every aspect of the consumer education campaign we hoped to inspire,” says Den Gardner, executive director of Project EverGreen, www.projectevergreen.com. “The judges were impressed with her ongoing effort to teach eco-green. For, our vision is to be a global organization that empowers people within communities to change society through the responsible creation and preservation of sustainable green spaces, such that the ever-increasing impacts of global warming in the world are measurably reduced; because Green Matters!”

“Sneed’s commitment to organics, the community and the environment,” says designer Jenny Jenkins-Rash of Sneed’s Nursery & Garden Center located in Richmond Virginia “are echoed in Wright’s book: the challenge for the present-day homeowner is to create a garden from an eco-chic point of view, a ‘waste not, and want not’ ecological commitment: be a caretaker for the environmental community. We support Wright’s advocacy through hosting book signings and having her book on site for sale.”

Career History –
A graduate of the Virginia Natural Resource Leadership Institute program and eco-columnist for the Greater Richmond Area, Wright is featured by Virginia Home Grown WCVE Richmond PBS TV, the Times Dispatch newspaper, State by State Gardening magazines and Birds & Blooms magazine for her hands-on eco-activities. A speaker for the Green Festival held in DC and event hostess for the GoGreen VA Garden Festival, her activities were recognized as the recipient of the VA Horticulture Foundation 2005 educator’s award and 2008 ‘Turning America from Eco-weak to Eco-chic’ award.
