Consonus Data Center Achieve ENERGY STAR(R) Rating

August 31, 2010 – 7:39 pmNo Comment

Consonus announced today that it has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR(R) for their South Data Center in Salt Lake City, Utah — the first of all commercial data centers in the nation to achieve this rating. The ENERGY STAR(R) designation puts Consonus in the top quartile for energy efficiency among data center peers.

“This achievement is a direct result of our continuous improvement program that focuses on resiliency, customer service and energy efficiency,” says Chief Information Officer Brent Wall. “Over the past year, we identified and completed over 40 initiatives that improved data center energy efficiency and reduced power consumption. We are delighted to be recognized through the EPA’s new ENERGY STAR rating for our proactive efforts to make our data centers more energy efficient.”

Some of the energy-efficient components and green initiatives used at the Consonus South Data Center include:

- Cold Aisle Containment
- CFD Modeling and Analysis
- Ducted Return Systems
- High Efficiency Floor Tiles

Launched on June 7, 2010, the EPA’s program for data centers facilitates the federal government’s continuing efforts to protect the environment and promote energy-efficient practices to reduce our dependence on foreign fossil fuels. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR designation, a licensed professional engineer must verify energy performance of the data center primarily using the power usage effectiveness (PUE) metric, which measures the total power supplied to a data center divided by the amount that actually reaches IT equipment, as opposed to being lost to cooling systems and inefficient power supplies and distribution systems.
